New York City (Dec. 2001)

It's been a few months since the tragedy that happened Sept. 11, 2001 in New York City
at the World Trade Center. Tensions are still up there, but I was determined to go to NYC
(specifically SoHo) and do some shopping. ****Coming Soon**** A full report of my travels
in & around NYC on a cold New York Saturday.

I drove down to my Dad's apartment in Stamford, CT on Friday night. Saturday morning
I caught the 7:00 AM Metro North train to Grand Central Station. Once at Grand Central
(around 8:00 AM), I navigated my way to the subway and took a 4-5-6 (can't remember
which) down to Canal Street.

At 8:30 AM, nothing was really open yet, shop-wise. Street venders were starting to set
up tables. Chinatown markets were receiving their supplies of produce. Bakeries will filling
up with locals getting coffee and pastries. I decided to start with a quickie breakfast at
Burger King on Canal Street and then start scouting out where I wanted to go check out
later when stuff actually opened up.

Stuff I saw, but didn't have time to thoroughly investigate:

- Terminal - 28-30 Watts (nr 6th Ave.) - Very futuristic furniture, plastic (?)
light-up yellow armchair, light-up tooth tables, cool odd steel/glass tables & more.

- On the window to Terminal there was a flyer advertising some DJ's spinning in
an apartment. Andrew & Andrew at APT, 419 W. 13th. I'm not sure if this is
really an apartment or not, but it seemed interesting. Their website is a tad confusing,
too. I don't know if they are doing some high-end clothing line, DJ-ing or what... Here, you
check it out... AndrewAndrew.org.

Around 9:00 AM I was on West Broadway and I was in awe over finding so many cool
brand name stores on the same street: Diesel Style Lab, Dolce & Gabana, DKNY and even a Swatch store
that I had to go into. I ended up buying three watches, one for a Christmas present and two for me. I hadn't
even planned on buying any watches in SoHo, because I didn't even know there was a Swatch store down here.

I crossed over back to regular Broadway for the opening of Canal Jeans. I deliberately took an early train into
the city to go to Canal Jeans first. Inevitably, I was way overwhelmed by Canal Jean's FIVE FLOORS of cool
clothes to choose from. I immediately headed downstairs to the "streetwear, men's shoes & vintage" area.
This store, for some reason or another, is invariably way too warm inside. I had dressed in a t-shirt, sweater &
my big black winter coat and was way too warm in there, but...I found some cool pants put out by a company
called Private Circle, found a Christmas present in the Levis area and in a brand name called "ILLIG", and
picked up a Kenneth Cole Reaction short sleeved plastic-y orange/yellow shirt... There is just SO MUCH stuff
at this store. I was amazed that there was a Ben Sherman area of clothes. This store has so much cool stuff that
all the big brand names are treated equally whereas at Allston Beat (in Boston), Ben Sherman stuff is a rare commodity...
