Hong Kong in 2004!

The Year of the Monkey!

Hong Kong was so good this PAST January 2003 that I really wanted
to go back and this time Chantal is definitely going! We've arranged
our travel plans through Asia Holidays in Boston, just like last time,
but it will all be new because Chantal's never set foot in China before.

Differences in the itinerary from last time include:

- Instead of Boston to Detroit to Tokyo to Hong Kong,
we have a Boston to Chicago to Hong Kong flight

- We're staying at the Hong Kong YMCA, right on the
Kowloon Penninsula, near the ritzy Penninsula Hotel

Hong Kong in 2003!

Ok... We have tickets, reservations, plans and all kinds of ideas laid
out for the Hong Kong trip to take place at the end of January 2003
and run through February 6.

My friend Mary is accomanying me on this massive trek
starting in Boston at 8:30 AM. We fly out of Logan to Detroit,
cool our heels for a bit and then hop a non-stop to Tokyo's Narita
airport, where we wake from our trans-pacific stupor and then hotfoot it
on over to Hong Kong's Chek Lap Kok airport out on Lantau Island.

23 hours total, not including the fact that we lose a day due to the International
Dateline and the layover time at Detroit & Tokyo, but still worth it in the end...

Here's the hotel we're staying at:

Shangri-La has updated
its website and has LOTS

I may not come back...perhaps...

MORE Hong Kong travel reviews & such will be posted

(This is text written right after the World Trade Center was
attacked and subsequently destroyed by terrorists.)

Well, in light of the current state of the world... terrorists turning planes into missiles,
turning innocent people into needless victims of a war nobody wants to fight, thereby
making the entire world all the more scary to travel to... Chantal & I are NOT going to
Hong Kong. I cancelled our trip a week after the Sept. 11 disaster in NYC/WashDC and am
being refunded in full, my total deposit amount.

Maybe next year...

Chantal found info re: a trip to Hong Kong in the AAA monthly newsletter thing that we get in the
mail. It was for a 4 day trip in November. Well, my work gets really crazy in the months before the
Thanksgiving / Christmas season, so that trip was out, BUT in calling AAA, they told me of a 6-day trip
to Hong Kong in February, specifically to be in Hong Kong for Chinese New Year (Lunar New Year).
The price was around $1700 incl. hotel, r/t airfare, a city tour and a bilingual guide at the hotel to help
us with stuff. We immediately signed on and I got the "ok" from work to take time off...

Since first signing up for the trip in June 2001, I've been doing all kinds of research and studying of maps,
websites pertaining to going to HK and guidebooks... Here are some links and pictures to check out...
(A full review of my trip will hit the website sometime in March, 2002.)

Traveller Road - VERY useful website with MANY great links, tips, suggestions,
reviews all about HONG KONG... This is where I found out that there's
a 700 store Mall called Harbor City right near our hotel wherein
lies a Toys'R'Us... Yum...
The Kowloon Shangri-La Hotel Hong Kong is where we'll be staying in HK and it's right
on the edge of Victoria Harbor where the fireworks will take place. This is a view of the
promenade that lines the coast in what's called Tsim Sha Tsui East.
Hong Kong Hotels Network has a bunch of great city maps with clickable areas of the
map showcasing some of the sights of Hong Kong. Very easy to use. Lots of great info.
Lonely Planet puts out very good guide books, with very practical tips on getting around
and dealing with strange, different places...

Virtual Tourist has many, many great pictures of not only Hong Kong,
but of allover the world. VT members post tips about packing lists (what to
bring on your trip), things they did there, travel advice, etc.

Worldroom's Guide to HK Bars & Nightclubs has a great list of bars,
nightclubs and all kinds of other reviews of HK stuff.
