Mr. DoColecoI play the oldschool arcade version on a multi-game stand-up game console at the famous Worcester dive the Hotel Vernon on a semi-regular basis (when I want both dollar drafts and an old videogame fix), but this Atari version, as nice as it is that there IS an Atari version of this game, quite frankly, BLOWS. Nice aattempt, but could have done alot better at capturing the magic of this amazingly fun game. Then again, Coleco never really did do a great job of making GOOD emulations of arcade classics. They just were the ones with the licenses and got to crank out games that really should have been better. (check out these improvement ideas on Mr. Do & other games!)
Conquest of MarsChamp GamesNew homebrew game from 2006, found of course on AtariAge.com. I haven't played it all that much, but it came with a stunning instruction booklet and cartridge label, which I guess is the now norm for dweebs making new carts/games for dweebs like me. The artsier and more professional, the better. Even better if the game kicks ass. (Scroll on down this guy's website to read HIS review)
Climber 5AtariAgeNew homebrew game from 2004, found of course on AtariAge.com. As usual, I haven't played it all that much, but who doesn't love smooth running climbing games involving high speed and puzzle solving and all that neat stuff? (Scroll on down this guy's website to read HIS review)
2006 MiniGame MultiCartAtariAge2005 collection of 1K titles created for the 2005 Minigame Competition. Titles included: Hunchy, Jetman, M-4, Marble Jumper, Nightrider, Rocket Command, and Zirconium. (Check out some pictures of the games.)
Cabbage Patch Kids - Adventures in the ParkColecoNot exactly an Atari 2600 or 7800 game at all, but... I met a woman on MySpace totally randomly one Sunday, asked if she'd like to be adventurous and meet a total stranger for coffee that afternoon in Worcester. She said yes and we met up and exchanged little "fist time meeting" presents, which neither of us really had to do, but we both had the same idea. One thing she gave me was this ColecoVision / Adam Family Home Computer System game of "Cabbage Patch Kids". What could be cooler than that? She actually did her research and had something really unique to share with a geek like me!

According to MobyGames: "Your player is a Cabbage Patch kid with pigtails who is having a day at the park. A day that includes jumping onto vines and leaping over holes and bouncing onto correct platforms. A misplaced jump will lose a life and additionally there are a few creatures such as bees who end the player's turn when touched." Um, cool, I guess... It was more the IDEA of this being a cool random act of geekiness more than the actual game. (Check out this Cabbage Patch Kids - Colecovision commercial.)

(Special thanks to Atari Age for help with research on these games.)

Doug's Atari Games

GameCompanyGame Type / Description
AdventureAtariadventure/fantasy
Adventure PlusSteve EngelhardtAdventure is one of the earliest and BEST Atari games ever. You play a yellow square roaming around mazes and castles and you acquire stuff like swords (that look like an arrow symbol) and bridges and magnets, etc. You slaw duck-looking dragons, avoid bats that steal stuff and fly around with potentially valuable tools and you attempt to return the golden chalice back to the gold castle. Well, Adventure Plus is the SAME game with new twists, new mazes, better looking dragons and other graphics. Good job, Steve, in designing a follow-up that doesn't suck! (Info from AtariAge.com)
Adventures of TronMattelarcade/movie-based
Air RaidersAtari
Air Sea BattleAtaritarget shoot / classic Atari game
AirlockData Ageweird space game I haven't taken the time to figure out yet. And, yes, I actually have the instructions.
Armor AttackMatteltank battle game, not as good as Battlezone or Robot Tank, not as fun as Combat
AsteroidsAtariarcade classic / shooting big asteroids into little asteroids, avoiding UFOs...
AstroblastMattelarcade, similar to Asteroids except you are stationary and have to shoot falling blocks / asteroids
AtlantisImagicarcade, defending your city with 3 laser cannons, shooting flying ships
AtlantisCCEBasically, this is the same as regular Atlantis put out by Imagic, but repackaged by a Brazilian company called CCE. I picked this game up while at the New England Classic Gamers annual "convention" in Jamaica Plain this plast winter...(Info about CCE from AtariAge.com)
BarnstormingActivisionarcade, fly your biplane through barns, over wind things, speed game
BasketballAtarisports
Bermuda TriangleData AgeFun game involving being underwater shooting stuff. Haven't played it enough yet to really get beyond that quickie description. (Info from AtariAge.com)
BerzerkAtariarcade, I love to watch the main character fry as he hits the electrified walls... heehee
Berzerk - Voice EnhancedHomebrew/AtariAgeThis re-working of the classic Atari game Berzerk is up there with the remake of Adventure EXCEPT that Berzerk VE has synthesized SPEECH... The robots actually try to taunt you with lines from the original arcade game: "Chicken, Fight Like A Robot", "Humanoid Must Not Escape" and the ever-popular "Intruder Alert! Intruder Alert!" Brings back memories... sigh... Now I must go shoot me some robots... (Info from AtariAge.com)
BowlingAtarisports, love the victory dance/jump as you get a strike
BreakoutAtarihey, look... if my PADDLES worked, I'd be playing this brick-breakin' game left & right, BUT they don't work... so...
Buck Rogers: Planet of ZoomSegaHaven't played it yet... cartridge is in GREAT condition, though...
BugsData Agearcade
Bump'n'JumpMattelthe best game I've gotten off eBay yet! Very fun, very true to arcade game. The premise here is to keep driving at any cost, crashing other cars into walls, avoiding driving off roads that just end, jumping & crushing other cars... A real driver's ed. dream game.
BurgertimeMattelarcade, you're a chef, you're making burgers & peppering your enemies
CentipedeAtariarcade
Championship SoccerAtarisports, awful game
Chopper CommandActivisionarcade
Circus AtariAtariarcade
CombatAtariarcade, tanks, biplanes, jets... possibly the BEST 2-player-at-same-time game for Atari
CommandoActivisionAnother "rare" find, acquired cheaply at the New England Classic Gamers annual "convention". Very similar to Frontline, but still a good cheeseball army shoot'em up game where you stumble through the desert in a hurky-jerky manner, lobbing grenades and letting loose some hellfire from your M-16. I expect to have some Post Traumatic Stress Disorder(s) after a couple hours of playing this one. Cue the "Deerhunter" theme... (Info from AtariAge.com)
Commando RaidU.S. Gamesarcade
Congo BongoSegaarcade, could have been good, but choppy movement, difficult control, just not fun
Cosmic ArkImagicarcade, oddball space game in 2 parts
Cosmic CommuterActivisionNever heard of this one before. I guess you fly around shooting things, getting fuel & picking up hitchhikers.
Cosmic CreepsTelesysarcade, awful game
Crystal CastlesAtariarcade, cutesy, Pac-Man-esque game
Dark CavernMattel
Dark ChambersAtariAdventure's young upstart brother, came out toward end of Atari, great Adventure game...
Deadly Duck20th Century Fox(If you just read the Strategy X, review, read this one in the same deadpan manner...) You're a duck. You're deadly. You're shooting at crap above you in the sky that's shooting back at you. Classic survival theme. But watch out... some of these vile enemies are sending down these blocker things that will restrict your movement and make it easier for them to wipe your feather coated butt off the map. Enjoy! (Info from AtariAge.com)
DefenderAtari/Searsarcade classic
Demon AttackImagicarcade
Desert FalconAtariarcade
Dig DugAtariarcade classic
Donkey KongColecoarcade classic
Donkey Kong JuniorColecoarcade classic
Double DunkAtari2 on 2 basketball game that is graphically light year's beyond regular Atari Basketball, but I'd like to play this with someone actually into basketball. Scores a "4" (meaning "scarce" on the rarity list at AtariAge.com, so I guess this is hard to find. (Info from AtariAge.com)
DragonfireImagicarcade
The Empire Strikes BackParker Bros.arcade / based on Star Wars movie
Encounter at L-5Data AgeSpace game, I guess, but it uses the paddles and mine are temporarily out of service.
EnduroActivisiondriving arcade game, possibly the BEST driving game for Atari. Very smooth graphics. Very fun.
E.T. The Extra TerresstrialAtariAdventure game? Based on E.T. movie
Flag CaptureAtaripuzzle game
Fast Eddie20th Century Foxarcade game, based sort of on Donkey Kong in that it has levels, ladders & enemies to jump over...
Fast FoodTelesysarcade, fast paced food eating / differentiating game
Final ApproachApolloI think that the deal here is to land airplanes, but judging from the screenshots on Atariage, I think you might also be battling extreme lethargy and boredom. Haven't played it yet, but this game hails from the Eric / Dirtbag donation of Atari games from earlier in 2005 when I put his band The Fashion Failures (from Pawtucket, RI) in my 'zine Action Geek. Seriously, "Dirtbag" is his nickname and I'm not just calling him that because he dumped Final Approach on me. (Other games from this gift bag collection will be labeled at the end of the review with (Dirtbag) so you'se all will know.(Info from AtariAge.com)
Fire FighterImagicarcade
Fire FlyMythiconawful awful game
FootballAtariSports, not all that fun
Frankenstein's MonsterData AgeHaven't played it yet, but the instructions that came with it sound incredible...
FreewayActivisionarcade, get that chicken across the freeway without getting smushed
FroggerParker Bros.arcade, get that FROG across the freeway without getting smushed AND over the river to his pad
Front LineColecoarcade, military... choppy movements, but still very fun multi-stage battle game
GalaxianAtariarcade classic
Ghost Manor - Spike's PeakXONOXThis is my FIRST purchase of one of those 2 games in 1 XONOX double headers! I was so psyched about finding one of these within my chincy price range that just the mere HAVING the game is good enough for me (meaning: I haven't played EITHER game yet). (Info from AtariAge.com)
G.I. Joe - Cobra StrikeParker Bros.Having acquired the GRAY label version, I have just discovered from the folks at Atari Age that I have the less desirable label of the game. REAL collectors are seeking out the color label. Hell, I just bough the game because I didn't want to miss out on the whole GI Joe pseudo-revival of sorts... (Info from AtariAge.com)
GopherU.S. Gamesum...gardening?
Grand PrixActivisionarcade, racing game
GravitarAtariFormer Atari Club-only game. Actually very fun. Kinda tough, too...
Human CannonballAtariarcade
Ice HockeyActivision
InfiltrateApollosports
James Bond 007Parker Bros. This was up until now my HOLY GRAIL of video games to acquire and now that I have it & have played it, I'm not nearly as enthralled with it as I thought I would. I THOUGHT there was primarily alot of running and shooting at evil enemy spies while atop a train, but this game has more of a Moonraker & Diamonds are Forever feel to it... space & underwater. Hoo ha.
Journey EscapeData Agearcade, dumb game revolving around rock band, Journey
JoustAtariarcade, flying ostrich knights doing battle, shooting other flying things, avoiding lava... lotsa button pushing to flap those damned wings!
Jungle HuntAtariarcade
Jr. Pac ManAtariarcade, THE best Pac Man game for Atari... 2nd is Ms. Pac Man... scrolling mazes, non-flickering ghosts, good speed.. fun!!!
Kaboom!Activisionarcade, very FUN game where a mad bomber drops multiple series of bombs and you have to catch 'em in your buckets of water... very FAST...
KangarooAtariarcade
King KongTigervisionGot this one off eBay, but it doesn't work, BUT it's in great aesthetic shape, so at least it looks good in my collection.
Kung-Fu MasterActivisionarcade
Keystone KapersActivisionarcade, fun cop vs. robber game in a dept. store.
KlaxAtariSimilar to Tetris, in a sense, in that it's a puzzle game, you have to match up rows or columns or diagonals of similarly colored bricks that fall from the sky. Pretty challenging! (Info from AtariAge.com)
KrullAtariarcade / movie & comic book based...
Laser BlastActivisionarcade
Laser VolleyTigervisionMy first Zellers cartridge. (See Atari Age for more info on Zellers. This game is actually a kinda obscure game by Imagic called "Laser Gates" except it's been repackaged.
Little Bearno company Chinese knock-off of Frostbite
Lost LuggageApolloLost Luggage is kinda like Kaboom! except that your job as the baggage handlers at an airport is to not miss any of the rapidly descending luggage. If you miss a bag, then you lose a guy and you get to see luggage open up and dispense various articles of clothing, yes, including a pixelated bra. (Info from AtariAge.com)
Mario Bros.Atariarcade, the ORIGINAL Mario / Luigi game
M.A.S.H.20th Century Foxarcade, based on TV show
Masters of the Universe / The Power of He-ManMattelarcade, based on comic book

Midnight MagicAtaripinball/arcade... THE Pinball game for Atari... enhanced version of regular Video Pinball...
MillipedeAtariarcade... like Centipede except there are MORE enemies, more features, more of everything...
Missile CommandAtariarcade classic
Montezuma's RevengeParker BrothersGreat game! Akin to Pitfall, Donkey Kong, Fast Eddie and Adventure all rolled into one incredibly fun game to play.
Moon PatrolAtariarcade, if the moon craters, weird UFOs and/or the annoying music don't get you, something else will...
Mouse TrapColecoarcade
Ms. Pac-ManAtariarcade
Omega RaceCBS Electronicsarcade
Pac-ManAtariarcade, BIG disappointment, but still an okay play...
Pac Man ArcadeRob KudlaHands-down, this is THE definitive version of Atari Pac Man. You can read all about the changes made on the Atari Age website, but let me just tell you that this re-working by Rob Kudla takes the cake, power pellet, cherries, whatever... It's very much closer to the arcade version of Pac Man. I still like Ms. Pac Man and Jr. Pac Man with the scrolling mazes, but this one is a great addition to the family. (Info from AtariAge.com)
PhoenixAtariarcade
Pitfall!Activisionarcade / adventure... still can't get that swinging vine music out of my head...
Pitfall 2Activisionarcade / adventure... more depth to this follow-up, more fun...
Planet PatrolSpectravisionarcade
Plaque AttackActivisionarcade / dental... defending one's teeth from food with a toothpaste tube... sounds stupid, but it's FUN...
Pole PositionAtariarcade / driving... Not nearly as good as Enduro, but still fun... (name mis-spelled on side of cartridge as "POLE POSITN")
PooyanKonamiA "pooyan" in Japanese, I guess, means "piglet" and in this game, Mama Pig's pooyans have been stolen by wolves and you're Mama Pig out to rescue them or something. Haven't played it that much, but it's cute anyway... (Info from AtariAge.com)
Pressure CookerActivisionarcade / great game where Fast Food is turned into a frantic problem-solving artform...
Q-BertParker Brothersarcade
Raft RiderU.S. GamesAnother case of the game not working, but the cartridge itself being in great shape.
Raiders of the Lost ArkAtariadventure / problem solving... fun for a while, but then annoyingly difficult... 2 joystick game...
Realsports BaseballAtarisports
Realsports FootballAtarisports
Realsports VolleyballAtarisports
Revenge of the Beefsteak Tomatoes20th Century Foxarcade
Riddle of the SphinxImagicadventure / problem solving... annoyingly so...
River RaidActivisionarcade / INCREDIBLE game... fly up-river, shoot stuff, refuel, avoid the walls, shoot bridges... great fun...
River Raid 2Activisionarcade / Baby brother to classic River Raid, except I can't seem to get the hang of dropping down, refueling and landing on the aircraft carrier...
Robot TankActivisionarcade / THE best 1st-person situated tank game... variable weather conditions, good sounds, good mobility...
Room of DoomComma Vidarcade
Skateboardin'Absolute Entertainmentsports / very RAD skateboarding game where you have to clear a certain number of obstacles like jumps, tubes, ramps, etc.
SeaquestActivisionarcade / very well designed undersea sub shoot'em up game
Secret QuestAtariadventure / problem solving
Skeet ShootApolloI have an orange kitty named Skeeto and if these bastards at Apollo think they can just shoot my cat willy nilly in one of their fancy schmancy Atari cartridges well then they've got another thing comin'... Thanks, Rob Halford & Judas Priest... Haven't played this game yet either but I'd be willing to bet that it involves you triggering the release of a SKEET and then having to time your shot perfectly to SHOOT the SKEET. I'm just guessing, though. (Dirtbag)(Info from AtariAge.com)
SkiingActivisionsports
Sky JinksActivisionarcade
Sky SkipperParker Brothersarcade
Slot RacersAtariarcade
SmurfColecoarcade / kids... Years ago, I bought this for my sister, but then I gradually stole it away from her...
SssnakeData AgeHaven't played it yet. Why all the extra "S"'s in the name? Are they just being ssssilly? (Info from AtariAge.com)
SolarisAtariarcade, COOL multi-stage space game akin to Imagic game "Cosmic Ark"
SorcererMythiconawful game
Space AttackMattel
Space CavernApolloarcade / silly sound effects
Space ChaseApolloarcade
Space InvadersAtariTHE grand-daddy of arcade games
Space JockeyU.S. Gamesarcade, seemingly simple (almost TOO simple) space shooting game
Spider FighterActivisionarcade , VERY fast shoot'em up game involving arachnids, fruit and fire-power
Spy HunterSegaI was very psyched to get this game, but it just didn't seem as playable or as fun as Enduro, Bump'n'Jump or even Activision's "Grand Prix". Still a nice find, though...
Squeeze BoxU.S. Gamesarcade / Breakout-like game
StarmasterActivisionarcade
Strategy XKonamiYou're driving a tank. You can't stop, because the screen is continually scrolling forward. You must avoid land obstacles lest ye be smashed to bits. You must shoot at the enemy tanks. You must avoid or shoot your way through walls to proceed on deeper into the game. Pretty fun game... (Info from AtariAge.com)
Super-Challenge BaseballMattelsports
Super FerrariTaiwan ripoffSee Atari Landfill for news/explanation of these repackaged weirdo Taiwanese games. This game is a repackaged "Enduro".
Super FootballAtarisports / light years better than regular Atari Football
SupermanAtariadventure / thief-catching game
SurroundAtariarcade / VERY fun 2 player game where you try to surround your opponent with a wall, while they do the same to you...
Swordquest EarthworldAtariadventure / puzzle game
Swordquest FireworldAtariadventure / puzzle game
Tac-ScanSegaarcade / awful game
TapewormSpectravisionAny game company gutsy enough to call their game "Tapeworm" is cool in my book. Hell, I'd even buy them a beer and maybe even a second beer IF this game turned out to be as cool to PLAY as it is to laugh hysterically at the name and the funky silver & 70s striped cartridge. (Dirtbag)(Info from AtariAge.com)
TapperSegaThis was one of my holy grail games to find! It's the ultimate combination of beer and Atari in game form. You play the bartender having to serve 4 long bars, shooting beers down the bars to surly, thirsty customers. Then they send the mugs back to you. Serve beer, catch mugs, don't screw up. AND there's even a shell game mini-game to Tapper, AND the graphics are really good! AND it progesses rather aggressively to faster & more challenging levels & configurations of bars. VERY cool game. (Info from AtariAge.com) - (even more of a review at: Video Game Critic) - (AND even more at: AtariPrototypes.com)
Task ForceFroggo Gamesarcade / awful game
TazAtariarcade / kids game
TennisActivisionsports
ThundergroundSegaarcade, tunnelling, shooting, kinda fun game
Title Match Pro WrestlingAbsolute EntertainmentHaven't played it yet. Looks like a great 2-player fighting game. The company was founded by an ex-Activision guy, hence alot of this co's line of games look really good for Atari games.(Info from AtariAge.com)
Tom BoyTaiwan ripoffSee Atari Landfill for news/explanation of these repackaged weirdo Taiwanese games. This game is a repackaged "Pitfall".
Towering InfernoU.S. GamesSeemingly endless game involving battling fire on each floor of this burning building. Fun, but still kinda tedious.(Info from AtariAge.com)
Tron Deadly DiscsMattelarcade, based on movie
TutankhamParker Brothersarcade / Egyptian-motif Indiana Jones idea game
VanguardAtariarcade, multi-stage shooting things game
VentureColecoarcade
Video ChessAtariit's chess.... CHESS, godammit... how else can I explain this?
Video PinballAtariclassic pinball
Wall BallAvalon HillYeah, you heard me, WALL BALL. I got the game from my stepmom who was sifting through stuff to put on eBay and I asked her if I could have Wall Ball and she said "yes". Always say "yes" to Wall Ball. Let that be a lesson to you. Haven't played it yet, but I guess it might be a rare one as it was Sports Illustrated magazine-sponsored. I dunno. AtariAge.com gives it a 7.(Info from AtariAge.com)
Winter GamesEpyxsports
Wizard of WorCBSarcade
Worm War I20th Century Foxarcade
XenophobeAtariHaven't played it yet, but I got it boxed WITH its instruction manual from a guy in England off eBay! I'll let you know all about it after I've played it... (Info from AtariAge.com)
